Problems Caused by Hysterectomy and Ovary Removal

We started out asking only Sans-Uteri members about the problems they've encountered since their hysterectomies but the list has grown to include many non―Sans-Uteri members as well. Here's what they've said:

  • Hot flashes that made me sick to my stomach .
  • Dizzy
  • Insomnia
  • Exhaustion
  • Joint aches, backache, and nerve pain (vaginal, back, legs, and ribs).
  • Moodiness
  • Depression
  • Panic Attacks
  • Pot tummy or "Buddha" belly, stomach muscles shot.
  • No libido or more of a sex drive then before.
  • Strong smells irritate causing allergic reactions.
  • Migraines
  • Very emotional
  • Weepy
  • Regular urinary tract infections, as well as ureter and kidney problems.
  • Pain when urinating has been going on since
catheter was removed 1 day postoperative (currently 4 1/2 week postoperative).
  • Significant and permanent weight changes.
  • Groin, leg, abdominal pain, and genital numbness.
  • Tender breasts and shooting pains through breasts.
  • Severe burning sensations on and above surgery scar, feels like you are on fire deep inside your abdomen.
  • Nightmares and/or very weird vivid dreams that disturb my sleep.
  • Profuse brown, odorous discharge identical to about three weeks post vaginal childbirth
  • Old scar used to do surgery running from navel to groin area. This scar still has burning sensation 3 1/2 months later.
  • Six months after surgery my abdomen feels heavy sometimes, also my knees and the back of my thighs ache.
  • Trouble controlling bladder, still wearing Poise pads and Depends at night (nearly 8 weeks after surgery).
  • Severe pain while having sex. No feeling. Sex and feelings are not as before the hysterectomy.

This list is in NO WAY meant to infer that all women who undergo hysterectomy will suffer with any or all of these problems.  It is a list of problems real women have had since their hysterectomy.  If you are having problems and wondering if they could be caused by your surgery . . . take another look!

This list is growing, if you'd like to add to it, please email Sans-Uteri.
